What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any issue involving your teeth, gums, or jaw that causes significant pain, swelling, bleeding, or risk of infection, or could worsen if left untreated.

You may need an emergency dentist near you if you are experiencing:

  • Severe or worsening tooth pain
  • Facial swelling or signs of infection
  • A broken, cracked, or knocked-out tooth
  • Bleeding that will not stop
  • Sudden sensitivity or pain when biting
  • A lost filling or crown is causing discomfort

If you are unsure whether your situation is urgent, it is always safer to call and ask. Our team can help you decide the next best step.

Common Dental Emergencies We Treat

Severe tooth pain

Persistent or intense toothache is one of the most common reasons patients seek urgent dental care. Pain may be caused by decay, infection, nerve inflammation, or a dental abscess. Emergency treatment focuses on relieving pain and identifying the underlying cause.

Broken or cracked teeth

A broken tooth emergency can happen due to accidents, falls, or biting something hard. Even if pain is mild at first, cracks can worsen quickly. Early treatment can help prevent infection or further damage.

Knocked-out teeth

A tooth that has been knocked out requires immediate attention. Acting quickly can sometimes improve the chance of saving the tooth, especially if you attend an emergency dental appointment as soon as possible.

Dental abscesses

A dental abscess is a serious infection that can cause swelling, fever, bad taste, and severe pain. Dental abscess treatment is urgent, as infections can spread if left untreated.

Lost fillings or crowns

When a filling or crown falls out, the exposed tooth can become sensitive or painful. Emergency care can protect the tooth and restore comfort until permanent treatment is completed.

Swelling, infection, or bleeding

Facial swelling, gum infections, or ongoing bleeding after dental trauma should always be assessed promptly by an emergency dentist.

What to do in a Dental Emergency (Immediate Actions)

If a tooth is knocked out

  • Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root
  • Rinse gently with milk or saline if dirty (do not scrub)
  • Store the tooth in milk or saliva
  • Attend an emergency dentist immediately

If there is severe bleeding

  • Apply firm pressure with clean gauze for 10–15 minutes
  • If bleeding does not slow or you feel unwell, attend A&E

If a tooth is broken

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water
  • Save any broken fragments
  • Avoid chewing on that side

If a filling or crown is lost

  • Keep the area clean
  • Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy may help in the short term
  • Avoid sticky or hard foods

If you suspect an abscess or infection

  • Do not ignore swelling, fever, or bad taste
  • Seek urgent dental care as soon as possible

Emergency Dental Treatment Process

Initial assessment

Your emergency appointment begins with a focused assessment to understand your pain, symptoms, and medical history. X-rays may be taken if needed.

Pain relief first

Our priority is to relieve pain and stabilise the problem. This may involve temporary treatment, medication where appropriate, or urgent intervention.

Clear explanation of options

Any recommended treatment will be explained clearly, including benefits, risks, and next steps. You will have time to ask questions before proceeding.

Emergency Appointment Availability

Cost of Emergency Dental Care

We understand that cost can be a concern, especially during stressful situations.

Emergency appointment fees

The cost of an emergency dental appointment depends on the assessment and treatment required. Fees are explained clearly before treatment begins.

NHS vs private emergency care

Some NHS emergency dentist treatments may be available, depending on eligibility and availability. Private emergency care often allows faster access and more flexible appointment times.

Payment and affordability

We aim to be transparent and supportive. If affordability is a concern, please speak to our team — we will explain options and help where possible.

When to Call an Emergency Dentist vs. Go to A&E

Knowing whether to contact an emergency dentist near you or attend A&E can save time and prevent unnecessary discomfort.

Call an Emergency Dentist If You Have:

Most dental emergencies are best treated by a dentist, including:

  • Severe tooth pain
  • Dental abscess or infection
  • Facial or gum swelling linked to a tooth
  • A broken tooth emergency
  • Knocked-out or loose teeth
  • Lost crowns, fillings, or bridges
  • Ongoing bleeding from gums
  • Mouth or soft tissue injuries

Emergency dentists are trained to provide rapid toothache relief and treat the cause of the problem.

Go to A&E If You Have:

Attend A&E immediately if you experience:

  • Heavy bleeding that won’t stop
  • Swelling affecting breathing or swallowing
  • Severe facial trauma or suspected jaw fracture
  • High fever or signs of spreading infection
  • Head injury or loss of consciousness

Hospitals are best equipped for medical emergencies beyond dental treatment.

Self-care Tips While Waiting for Your Emergency Appointment

If you are waiting to be seen by an emergency dentist, a few simple steps can help reduce discomfort and prevent the problem from worsening. These measures are temporary and do not replace professional dental treatment.

  • Take suitable pain relief
Over-the-counter pain relief, such as Paracetamol or Ibuprofen, may help reduce pain if you are able to take them safely. Always follow the instructions on the packaging and avoid placing painkillers directly on the tooth or gums.
  • Rinse gently with warm salt water
Rinsing with warm salt water can help soothe irritated gums and keep the area clean. This may be particularly helpful if there is swelling or soreness around the tooth.
  • Avoid chewing on the affected side
Try to eat soft foods and avoid biting or chewing near the painful area. This can help prevent further damage, especially if a tooth is cracked or a filling has been lost.
  • Keep the area clean
Brush gently around the affected tooth and floss carefully if comfortable. Good oral hygiene can help reduce irritation while waiting for urgent dental care.
  • Apply a cold compress for swelling
If there is facial swelling, a cold compress held against the outside of the cheek for short periods may help reduce inflammation. Do not apply heat, as this can worsen swelling.
  • Avoid very hot, cold, or sugary foods and drinks
These can increase sensitivity and pain, particularly if the tooth nerve is affected or exposed.
  • Do not attempt DIY dental repairs
Avoid using household glues or sharp objects to fix broken teeth or lost restorations, as this can cause further damage.

If pain, swelling, or bleeding worsen while waiting, please contact us immediately or seek urgent medical care if symptoms become severe.

Dentique Specialist Dentist Dental Arts Studio is an excellent practice. They are very efficient and friendly. I have always had brilliant service from them, whether it be an emergency appointment or a normal check up. My children come here too. The dentists are excellent with them and they have none of the traditional ‘fear’ of the dentist. I highly recommend them.N.M

Dental Art Studio was recommended to me by my fiancee who is also a very nervous patient.

They were excellent at explaining to me what was going to happen during the process of two fillings, one of which was very large. They made me feel very reassured during both procedures and were very professional without being impersonal.

The best dentist that have ever worked on me!James Dee
